Parents of a Troubled Teen
I've been thinking about it for quite some time, and have decided to go back to my first army - Vampire Counts. I did these first because the idea of painting everything intimidated me - and I knew how to paint skeletons. When I sold my original minis to my oldest son, he was in the marching band and wanted to do an army that was all musicians. Skeletons and musicians immediately suggested The Grateful Dead to me, but he wasn't intesested. So now, several years later, I'm building the army. For now, this will have Work-in-progress shots. I've been getting the models, and have just started the construction / conversion process, and am a far cry from the painting yet. But that doesn't stop me from taking a few pictures anyway.
Grateful Undead
Well, the Grateful Undead have made their debut at Origins 2009, in the Warhammer Fantasy Battles Tournament sponsored by the Olde World Warriors. While the turn out was a bit disappointing, they did manage to walk away with "Best Army"! Next up is Buckeye Battles 2009
Dead-Heads
Every Vampire Count army needs lots of zombies - and so these are naturally the Dead Heads!!! Tie-Dyed t-shirts and jeans. And they didn't have lighters back then, so they are waving torches. Except for that one guy in the first row - with the red leather jacket and one glove - who might that be?
Skeletons
The Grateful Dead are known for images of dancing skeletons - either with roses, or in top hats and tails.
Roadies
What is a concert without roadies to set up and haul the equipment? These are ghouls.
Groupies
The Wraiths, led by a banshee, are the groupies, so in love with the band they sing all the songs, throw their bras on stage, and will offer to marry the band!
Souvenir Cart
The corpse cart will be hauling around t-shirts and posters, instead of dead bodies.
Dancing Teddy Bears
I plan on using dire wolves to fill he role of the famed Dancing Teddy Bears. Or maybe it is the other way around? I had more WIP pictures but the disk couldn't be read by my PC - stupid old digital cameras! These may have ended up WAY too big - scale would be about 15' tall - so I'm not sure if they will still work or not. Since they were so big, I completely redid them - and now they aren't quite so big
Refreshments
What is a dead concert without somebody partaking of 'not quite legal' refreshments. I figure a few bases of figures obscured in smoke will work for Spirit Hosts.
Security
Does anybody remember Altmont? When the Rolling Stones hired the Hells Angels to run security - and they beat a guy to death? Ok, so it isn't exactly the Grateful Dead, but it is close enough that I needed to add a unit of Hells Angels running security also known as Blood Knights.
The Band
Of course, the characters will be Jerry Garcia and the band. I figure guitars would make good Great Weapons, won't they?
Display
Of course, the only way to display the Grateful Dead is a concert - so I made a stage. My iPod hooks up to play music and display album covers, and there are miniature concert posters on the scafolding. Of course the roadies are backstage, with the deadheads out front (though the groupies are right in front of the stage).
